Several closures along the Eastrail this winter required trail users in Renton and Kirkland to follow detours due to planned maintenance, utility upgrades, and adjacent construction projects. This week, the major closure at the south end of the Cross-Kirkland Corridor reopened. However, additional closures are expected later this year. Below is a status update on current and planned closures along the Eastrail.
Southern Kirkland Closure
Emergency repair work on the Eastside Interceptor sewer line required an unplanned, multi-month closure between NE 52nd Street and 108th Avenue NE in Kirkland. That section of trail has now reopened. Additional work may require another temporary closure this summer. Eastrail Partners will coordinate with King County and the City of Kirkland to share updates and detour information if that occurs.
Central Kirkland Closure
The City of Kirkland has closed a section of trail near NE 85th Street to accommodate construction of a pedestrian connection associated with a future transit project. Two detour routes are currently in place. The trail segment is expected to reopen in late June 2026.
Slater Avenue / 132nd Crossing (Totem Lake area)
A short detour remains in place east of Totem Lake where the trail crosses Slater Avenue. The City of Kirkland is installing a signalized crossing at this intersection to improve safety and accessibility. Construction is expected to be completed in April.
Eastrail Partners recognizes that closures can disrupt both daily transportation and recreational use. We continue working closely with our public agency partners to minimize impacts and provide timely, clear communication.
